Perth's summer racing season at Ascot is a great day out, even if you don't know a thing about horses. Here's how to enjoy race day on a budget.
A great day out, even if you don’t bet
I’m not a big punter, but a summer race day at Ascot is one of my favourite days out in Perth. The racecourse in Ascot is only about 8 km from the city, beside the Swan River, and it’s been hosting races since the 1840s.
You don’t need to know anything about horses to have fun. The atmosphere, the people watching and the thunder of hooves down the straight are worth the trip on their own.
Quick facts
- Where: Ascot Racecourse, beside the Swan River, about 8 km from the city.
- Season: Summer racing from October to New Year’s Day.

- Cheapest option: General admission at a regular Saturday meeting.
- Dress: Smart on carnival days, more relaxed at regular meetings. Wear comfortable shoes.

When to go
Ascot’s summer racing season runs from October to New Year’s Day. The big days include Railway Stakes Day in November and the Perth Cup on New Year’s Day. Check dates and tickets at Perth Racing.
Big carnival days are the most fun but also the busiest and most expensive. A regular Saturday meeting is cheaper and more relaxed.

How to keep it cheap
- Go general admission: you don’t need a marquee or package to have a good time.
- Set a betting budget: decide how much you’re happy to lose before you arrive, and stick to it. I bring cash and leave the card at home.
- Bet small: a few dollars each way on a horse with a funny name is just as fun as a big bet.
- Eat before you go: food and drinks at the track add up quickly.
“If you are sticking to a tight budget while traveling the general admission is also perfect for a great day out.”

What to wear
Race day is a good excuse to dress up. Carnival days tend to be smart, with suits, dresses and hats, while regular meetings are more relaxed. Wear comfortable shoes, because you’ll be on your feet, and bring a hat and sunscreen for the summer heat.

Getting there and home
Don’t drive if you’re planning to drink. Rideshare, taxis and buses are the easiest options. On big days, plan your trip home before the last race, as everyone leaves at once.
“Love this place especially midweek when it’s free entrance and access to everywhere.”

Gamble responsibly. If betting stops being fun, take a break.
