Sweeping city views from the Zig Zag, waterfalls, orchards and a giant adventure playground. Here's my guide to a day out in Kalamunda and the Perth Hills.
Head for the hills
Just 30 minutes east of the Perth CBD, Kalamunda and the Perth Hills feel a world away from the city. There are bush walks, waterfalls, orchards and some of the best views over Perth.
Here’s my guide to a day out in the hills, starting with the famous Zig Zag Scenic Drive.
“The Zig Zag is one of my favourite short rides on the motorbike. Tight hairpins, a smooth run down the escarpment and the whole city spread out in front of you. Just take it easy, because you’re sharing the road with walkers and cyclists.”

The Zig Zag Scenic Drive
The Zig Zag Scenic Drive winds down the escarpment in Gooseberry Hill along a route once used by the railway to haul timber. The hairpin bends offer sweeping views across Perth to the city skyline and beyond.
A few things to know before you go:
- It’s one way, from top to bottom.
- Cars can use it from 11am to 8.30pm, seven days a week. The gates are locked from 8.30pm to 11am, and any car still inside is locked in overnight.
- Walkers and cyclists can use the drive at any time. It’s a shared zone, so take care.
- Stop only in designated areas, as the area is patrolled and fines apply.
- There are no public toilets along the drive.
For a sunset visit, aim to arrive with enough time to get out before the gates close. Check the City of Kalamunda website for any changes.

Lesmurdie Falls
In Mundy Regional Park, Lesmurdie Falls has short trails with lookouts over the escarpment and views back to the city. The waterfall is at its best in winter and spring, but the walk and views are worth it all year. Go early in summer to avoid the heat.
Kalamunda History Village
On Railway Road, the Kalamunda History Village is WA’s largest open-air museum. Explore an old steam train, schoolhouse, post office and vintage vehicles.
Stirk Park
In the heart of Kalamunda, Stirk Park has a large adventure playground with tube slides, climbing structures and a flying fox, plus a skate park and lots of shady grass. It’s perfect for a picnic lunch.

Orchards and the Bickley Valley
The Bickley Valley is known for its orchards, wineries and cideries. In summer, some orchards open for Christmas fruit-picking days, so check their websites before you go. Core Cider House in Pickering Brook offers orchard tours and lunch.
In nearby Carmel, Masonmill Gardens has a cafe, beer garden and mini golf. See our guide to Perth’s best mini golf.
Kalamunda Night Market
On selected Friday nights until May 2027, the Kalamunda Night Market brings local makers, food trucks and live music to the town centre. See our guide to Perth’s best twilight markets.
Tips for a day in the hills
- The hills can be a few degrees warmer or cooler than the city, so check the forecast.
- Bring water and sturdy shoes for the walk trails.
- Check for fire bans and park alerts in summer.
