Shady trees, free BBQs, the famous blue boat shed and city views across the Swan River. Here's my guide to a perfect day at Matilda Bay in Crawley.
Perth’s prettiest picnic spot
On the banks of the Swan River in Crawley, Matilda Bay Reserve is one of the most beautiful spots in Perth. Big shady trees, calm water and views across the river to the city make it perfect for a lazy afternoon.
Here’s my guide to a day at Matilda Bay.
“Matilda Bay is where I go when I want to slow down. A picnic under the trees, a walk along the river, and the city skyline glowing at sunset.”

Picnics and BBQs
Matilda Bay Reserve has free electric BBQs, picnic tables, public toilets and plenty of mature trees for shade. It’s a popular spot for family gatherings and birthday picnics, so arrive early on weekends to grab a good spot.

The blue boat shed
Just south of the reserve, the Crawley Edge Boatshed, better known as the blue boat shed, is one of Perth’s most photographed landmarks. The little blue shed at the end of a jetty is especially beautiful at sunrise.
It can get very busy with photographers, so be patient, share the space and stay off the private jetty.
Splash in the river
There’s a small beach at Matilda Bay for paddling and splashing. Kids love jumping off the jetty, but always check the water depth and any hazards first. The area is also popular for stand-up paddleboarding and fishing.
Walk or ride the river
A shared path runs along the river, making it easy to walk or cycle towards Kings Park, the city or Nedlands. It’s a lovely, flat route with views the whole way.
The University of Western Australia campus is right next door, and its grounds are also worth a wander.
Where to eat
- Bayside Kitchen: brunch and takeaway coffee by the river, with a kids’ menu and games.
- Matilda Bay Restaurant: an award-winning restaurant with river and city views, perfect for a special occasion.
Getting there
There’s paid parking along Hackett Drive, but it fills quickly on weekends. You can also catch a bus along Stirling Highway or Mounts Bay Road and walk down. Check the Transperth Journey Planner for the best route.
Stay for sunset
As the sun goes down, the city skyline lights up across the water. It’s one of the best free views in Perth.
