Fish and chips eaten on the beach

Nothing beats fish and chips on the grass as the sun sets over the ocean. Here's my guide to Perth's best beachside fish and chip shops, and where to eat them.

A Perth summer tradition

Fish and chips on the beach at sunset is one of the simple joys of a Perth summer. Grab a paper-wrapped parcel, find a spot on the grass, and watch the sun sink into the Indian Ocean.

Here’s my guide to the best fish and chips by the water in Perth, and the best spots to eat them.

“A summer Sunday with my family often ends the same way: fish and chips on the grass, my nieces and nephews chasing seagulls, and the sun going down over the ocean.”

Cicerello’s, Fremantle

Operating on Fisherman’s Wharf since 1903, Cicerello’s is a Fremantle icon. Take your order to the grass near Bathers Beach for a sunset dinner by the harbour.

Also near Bathers Beach is Twin Fin, a fast-casual spot with traditional and premium options.

Sealanes, South Fremantle

Attached to a seafood market that’s been operating since 1928, Sealanes is right across the road from South Beach. Grab takeaway and head over to the grassed reserve by the water.

Amberjacks, Cottesloe

A Cottesloe institution on Marine Parade, Amberjacks serves battered fish and chips and tempura prawns. The grassed terraces at Cottesloe Beach are the perfect place to eat them. See our guide to Cottesloe with kids.

Peters By The Sea, Scarborough

On the Esplanade, across from Sunset Hill, Peters By The Sea is a long-time Scarborough favourite. Eat on the amphitheatre grass or head up Sunset Hill for the view. See our guide to things to do in Scarborough.

The Groper and His Wife, City Beach

In the shopping complex on Grayton Road in City Beach, this long-running shop is a local favourite. Walk down The Boulevard to the grass by the beach to eat. For something bigger, Clancy’s Fish Bar at City Beach also does takeaway seafood baskets.

Batter Up, Hillarys

On the boardwalk at Hillarys Boat Harbour, Batter Up does traditional fish and chips plus grilled options. Find a patch of grass near the Centre Groyne. See our guide to Hillarys Boat Harbour with kids.

Rockingham and Safety Bay

Down south, Rockingham Beach Fish and Chips is right across the road from the Rockingham foreshore, with a boardwalk nearby for a post-dinner stroll. In Safety Bay, Catchy Fish and Chips is another great option by the beach.

Tips for the perfect fish and chip dinner

  • Check sunset times and order about 30 minutes before.
  • Bring a picnic rug and some napkins.
  • Keep your food covered, as the seagulls are fearless.
  • Take your rubbish with you, or use the bins provided.

Grab a parcel and head to the beach

Whether you’re in Fremantle, Scarborough or somewhere in between, there’s always great fish and chips close to the water in Perth. Enjoy the sunset!
