Fireworks bursting over the Swan River in Perth

Family fireworks at 8.30pm, the big show at midnight and free public transport home. Here's my guide to seeing in 2027 in Perth without spending a cent.

Ring in the new year under the fireworks

There’s something special about New Year’s Eve on the Swan River. The city skyline, the warm summer air, and a sky full of fireworks reflected on the water.

The best part? You don’t need a ticket to enjoy it. Here’s my guide to the best free spots to watch the fireworks in Perth as we welcome 2027.

“For me, New Year’s Eve in Perth is all about a picnic rug on the foreshore with family. Get there early, bring dinner, and enjoy the atmosphere as the sun goes down over the river.”

Two shows: early and midnight

In recent years, the City of Perth has put on two fireworks displays over the Swan River: a family-friendly show at 8.30pm and the main show at midnight. The early show is perfect if you have kids in tow who won’t make it to 12.

Check the City of Perth website closer to the date for this year’s times and program.

Elizabeth Quay and Barrack Square

For the full experience, head to Elizabeth Quay in the heart of the Perth CBD. You’re right in front of the action, with food and drink options close by.

It’s also the busiest spot in the city, so arrive early if you want a good view.

Supreme Court Gardens

Just a short walk from Elizabeth Quay, the Supreme Court Gardens offer lots of grass to spread out on. It’s a great option for families with picnic rugs and prams.

South Perth foreshore

For my money, the South Perth foreshore is one of the best places to watch. You get the fireworks with the whole city skyline as a backdrop, and there’s plenty of space along the water.

Other free fireworks around Perth

If you’d rather avoid the city crowds, several other areas have hosted their own fireworks in recent years:

  • East Perth: Gloucester Park, on the eastern edge of the city.
  • Applecross: a display over the river near the Raffles Hotel.
  • Mindarie: an early show at the Breakwater Marina, with space to spread out.
  • Rockingham: fireworks off the Rockingham foreshore near the jetty.

Times and locations can change each year, so check with the local council before you go.

Getting there and home

Driving into the city on New Year’s Eve is hard work, with road closures and limited parking. Public transport is the way to go.

In recent years, Transperth has offered free trains, buses and ferries from just after midnight until early morning on New Year’s Day. Check Transperth for this year’s arrangements.

Tips for a great night

  • Arrive by late afternoon to claim a good spot.
  • Pack a picnic dinner, water and a rug.
  • Bring a light jumper, as the river breeze can be cool late at night.
  • Agree on a meeting point in case anyone gets separated in the crowd.

Here’s to 2027

Whether you catch the early show with the family or stay up for midnight, watching the fireworks over the Swan River is one of the best free nights out in Perth.
