From Moonlight Cinema in Kings Park to the rooftop screens of Northbridge, here's my guide to watching a movie under the stars in Perth this summer.
Movies under the stars
Few things say Perth summer quite like a movie under the stars. A picnic, a warm evening breeze and a big screen in the open air.
Here’s my guide to Perth’s best outdoor cinemas for the 2026/27 season.
“An outdoor movie is my go-to summer night out with friends. Pack a picnic, grab a cushion, and get there early to watch the sky change colour before the film starts.”
Alex Hamilton, Editor
Moonlight Cinema, Kings Park
Moonlight Cinema has been screening films in Kings Park for more than 30 years. This season opens on 3 December and runs through to March, with blockbusters and new releases on the lawn at May Drive Parkland. Check the session times on the Moonlight Cinema website.
Bring a rug and a picnic, and stay for a stroll around Kings Park before the film.

Luna Outdoor Cinema, Leederville
Tucked behind the iconic Luna on Oxford Street in Leederville, the Luna Outdoor Cinema is small, intimate and fully licensed. The season runs from late November to February, with new releases and cult favourites.
Make a night of it with dinner on Oxford Street first. See our guide to Leederville’s Oxford Street.
Camelot Outdoor Cinema, Mosman Park
Set in the courtyard of the heritage-listed Camelot building in Mosman Park, this summer cinema is one of Perth’s prettiest. Grab a deckchair, order a drink from the bar and settle in under the stars.
Rooftop Movies, Northbridge
Six levels up on Roe Street in Northbridge, Rooftop Movies combines city views with a mix of new and classic films. It’s a great option for a date night or drinks with friends.
Somerville Auditorium, UWA
Screening films since 1946, the Somerville Auditorium at the University of Western Australia in Crawley is a Perth institution. Watching a film under the towering pines is a truly special experience.
Picnics are welcome, and woodfired pizza is available before the film.
Telethon Community Cinemas
With venues in Burswood, Bassendean, Joondalup and Murdoch, Telethon Community Cinemas offers a wide mix of films at prices that haven’t changed since 2012. There are regular free screenings too, which makes it one of the most affordable nights out in Perth.
Galaxy Drive-In, Kingsley
For something different, the Galaxy Drive-In in Kingsley is one of Australia’s last remaining drive-ins. It’s open all year and is perfect if you have little ones who might fall asleep before the credits roll.
Kookaburra Outdoor Cinema, Mundaring
Up in the Perth Hills, the Kookaburra Outdoor Cinema screens indie and new release films from November to April, Friday to Sunday. It’s a lovely excuse for a summer evening drive.

Tips for an outdoor movie night
- Book ahead for popular films and weekend sessions.
- Check each cinema’s food and drink rules before you pack.
- Bring a cushion, a light jumper and insect repellent.
- Check the weather, as screenings can be cancelled in storms.
Grab your picnic rug
Whether it’s the pines at Somerville or the lawns of Kings Park, an outdoor cinema is one of the best ways to spend a summer night in Perth.
